The M23 rebel group has reportedly taken control of parts of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), though the government denies this, claiming strategic areas like the airport remain under its control. The city, home to over a million people, has seen mass displacements, with more than 400,000 fleeing violence in North and South Kivu since the start of 2025.
Amid accusations of Rwanda backing the rebels and counterclaims of DR Congo supporting anti-Rwandan militias, regional leaders, including Kenya’s President William Ruto, are calling for a ceasefire ahead of an emergency summit. The UN Secretary-General has urged Rwanda to withdraw its forces and M23 to halt its advance.
