Anthony Joshua, the British-Nigerian boxer, has set a goal for 2025: defeating Tyson Fury to become a three-time world heavyweight champion. During a visit to Lagos, Nigeria, he outlined his ambitions and reflected on his career.
Joshua returned to his hometown of Sagamu in Ogun State, reconnecting with the community and meeting local leaders. The Ogun State Government announced plans to construct an Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Ring in Abeokuta and named him the state’s official sports ambassador. He is also set to light the ceremonial torch at the Gateway Games National Sports Festival in May.
In Lagos, Joshua met with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and President Bola Tinubu, presenting the latter with an autographed boxing glove. Tinubu praised Joshua for his achievements, highlighting his role as an ambassador for Nigeria.
Joshua’s career has included significant victories and challenges. After holding the heavyweight title from 2016 to 2019, he faced setbacks, including losses to Oleksandr Usyk. In 2023, he rebounded with key victories, including a knockout against Cameroonian fighter Francis Ngannou. He acknowledged disappointment in his 2024 match against Daniel Dubois but remains focused on future opportunities.
Beyond boxing, Joshua is committed to giving back to Nigeria and staying connected to his roots. He emphasized the importance of contributing to the communities that shaped him and encouraged Nigerians in the diaspora to remain connected to their homeland.
As he prepares for 2025, Joshua’s determination to reclaim the heavyweight title underscores his resilience and ambition. His journey continues to inspire fans globally, solidifying his legacy as a prominent figure in sports and a proud representative of Nigeria.
