Netflix is revisiting Hillman College, setting the stage for a new era of A Different World. The streamer has commissioned a pilot for a sequel to the groundbreaking sitcom, signaling a potential return to one of television’s most celebrated depictions of Black college life.
While details on casting remain under wraps, the project is expected to introduce fresh characters alongside familiar faces. Reports indicate that the storyline may center on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), as she experiences her own journey at the fictional HBCU. Production on the pilot is scheduled to begin in June, shaping the series’ tone and direction before a full-season commitment is made.
Airing from 1987 to 1993, A Different World started as a Cosby Show spinoff but quickly found its own voice, evolving into a cultural touchstone. With an ensemble cast that included Dawnn Lewis, Darryl M. Bell, Sinbad, Charnele Brown, Cree Summer, and Glynn Turman, the show tackled pressing social issues while offering an authentic portrayal of Black college life.
Felicia Pride (Queen Sugar, Grey’s Anatomy, Bel-Air) is on board as a writer and executive producer, joining a powerhouse team that includes original contributors Debbie Allen, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood. Their involvement signals a commitment to honoring the show’s legacy while crafting a fresh narrative for a new generation.
Netflix’s decision to greenlight a pilot instead of moving straight to series is a rarity for the platform, which typically opts for full-season orders. This measured approach allows the creative team to refine the series concept before proceeding with a larger commitment.
As production gears up for the summer, longtime fans and newcomers alike eagerly await the opportunity to see Hillman College back on their screens, reimagined for today’s audience.
